Make NASA Cool!

Center leadership has recently identified what is called a “strategic opportunity”. We, as a center, have the opportunity to help change people’s perception of Langley as well as the Agency as a whole. We need your ideas for how to make NASA cool! Put your ideas here and they will be added to those presented to the Center Leadership Council on October 13.

Thanks

Rollout Social

We had a rollout social for our group on Monday, August 17th in the Reid Center at NASA LaRC. It was a good turnout and there were lots of new people looking to get involved. Here are the slides that we presented, for those who couldn’t make it.

Telework Day – Aug. 3rd

The Next Generation Advisory Committee (NGAC) is working to raise awareness of Governor Tim Kaine’s announcement of the Statewide Telework Day to be held on Monday, August 3. NGAC is supporting Langley’s senior management by conducting research to determine the effectiveness and productivity of those who participated. Conversely, the NGAC will also analyze the lack of participation and the reactions of employees about teleworking. Please look for our advertisements on @LaRC this week about how you can potentially assist the committee in their efforts to learn more about the attitudes and flexibility surrounding this new shift.

If possible, please consider taking this opportunity to telework. More information about Statewide Telework Day is posted below.

Thank you!

Art and science part deux

tetyanahollandsworthnorfolkKids  do have amazing imaginations and some have equally remarkable artistic skills. If you can’t make it to the Virginia Air & Space Center in downtown Hampton (Va.) to see the 2009 NASA Langley calendar art winners you can check them out here.

The grand prize winner was a picture (seen here) by ninth grader Tetyana Hollandsworth of Norfolk Collegiate School in Norfolk, Va.

Is Jungle Out There. Be careful, plzkthnx

Am home with Teh SickXX0res and going to miss awesome new year party, but I ventured out to get a book and some caffeine and was appalled at the huge percentages of people acting boneheaded.

Columbia’s last moments

Columbia crew members were killed when the shuttle broke apart upon re-entering Earth's atmosphere. All the news media outlets are carrying this story about the last moments aboard the shuttle Columbia.

“The graphic, 400-page report includes many recommendations to make things safer for future space travelers.” – CNN

Yes Virginia, there is a NORAD

NORAD Santa Claus in white backgroundI’d thought that when the kids began to wonder what’s  really up with Santa, I would read them that wonderful old editorial “Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.”

Christmas Eve, however, found us at the computer looking up Mr. Claus’s whereabouts via the Santa Tracker of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).

The kids were mildly impressed by the web stuff. When I called 877 HINORAD and put them on speaker phone, things kicked into high gear.

Can’t speak for the kids, but I was totally shocked when a real person answered the phone. The very nice young NORAD lady asked where we lived, then told us Santa would enter Virginia airspace between 10 p.m. and midnight “and if you have any little ones, they should be in bed by nine o’clock!”

Talk about instant credibility. After the jaw-dropping was over, the eldest two made a beeline for their bedroom. When I tucked the youngest in, he asked to forgo the usual nighttime story so he could go right to sleep.

Unheard of!

The scene illustrated the power of a live human voice on the telephone … and the need in us all to continue believing.

Thanks NORAD.

O’Brien out/CNN disbands science unit

obriensmall2CNN’s Miles O’Brien (seen here when he did a broadcast from Langley a few years ago) is leaving CNN, because the cable network is disbanding its science, space and technology unit. (See story here)

I watched CNN and FOX news over the weekend when Endeavour landed. There was no comparison between O’Brien’s expertise and the reporter on FOX.

The news viewing public will be considerably less informed without his presence.                                                  Kathy Barnstorff

A NASA sticker goes a long way … literally

New NASA fanHere’s a suggestion (from Kathy Barnstorff). Whenever I travel I carry some NASA stickers. I hand them out to kids who have been particularly good on planes, and, of course, take the chance to mention NASA aeronautics! This young lady and her sister were incredibly well-behaved on a very long flight to Australia.
